SMANN Annual Report 2006 Highlights of SMANN’s Activities & Accomplishments in 2006
¨ SMANN received NANN’s Chapter of the Year Award for 2006. Several members from SMANN attended the annual NANN conference in Nashville, Tennessee to receive the award. SMANN also donated a basket for the silent auction at the conference. ¨ SMANN's 14th Annual Conference was held on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at the Kensington Court Hotel in Ann Arbor, MI. The program was titled Hot Topics in the NICU. ¨ Contact hour approved programs offered in 2006 included: New NRP Guidelines, Neonatal Pain Management, and Motivation in the Workplace. ¨ The SMANN Annual Holiday Dinner was held at Bucca di Beppo in Livonia, MI on Thursday, November 16th. The educational offering was Neonatal Jeopardy. ¨ SMANN members participated in the Annual Garage Sale at the Westland Community Center, in Westland, MI on Saturday, May 13th. The proceeds of $626 were donated to Camp Michi-MAC, a local summer camp for children with asthma. The remaining items from the garage sale were donated to the Salvation Army and the Dearborn Public Library. ¨ SMANN hosted two Texas Hold ‘Em nights in 2006. The first was held February 2nd with 84 participants and the second was held September 30th with 56 participants. Over $1500 was donated to both The Detroit Institute for Children and S*T*A*R*S (Seeking Techniques Advancing Research in Shunts). ¨ SMANN members generously contributed to theme collections throughout the year. Easter basket items were collected and donated to the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS) at the Annual Conference in March. Baby shower items were donated to COTS at the May meeting. In September, school supplies were donated to Children’s Hospital of Michigan Mobile Health Center. In November, at our Holiday Dinner, items were donated to COTS’ Santa Shop to provide Christmas gifts for the children. ¨ In December, SMANN members helped out at the Festival of Trees, a benefit for Children’s Hospital of Michigan. ¨ Several members represented SMANN at the March of Dimes Prematurity Summit, held last May in Lansing, Michigan. Several SMANN members participated in the Annual March of Dimes’ WalkAmerica. ¨ SMANN celebrated National Neonatal Nurses Day in September. The SMANN board distributed goodie bags to each of the NICUs in the area. SMANN members received travel mugs in recognition of their service. ¨ SMANN’s Excellence in Clinical Practice Award was given to Meralyn Hilaldo. Meralyn was awarded a complimentary NANN and SMANN membership as well as registration to SMANN’s Annual Conference in 2007. ¨ SMANN members were kept informed of SMANN events and news by means of our website (www.smanninfo.org), our newsletter (SMANNews) posted on the website, and our Yahoo groups listserv. ¨ SMANN maintained a professional affiliation with the Neonatal Nurse Managers of Metropolitan Detroit (NNMMD). ¨ A presentation board depicting SMANN activities and accomplishments was displayed at the Annual SMANN and NANN Conferences. ¨ SMANN conducted 5 board meetings and 5 business meetings to plan and facilitate the year’s activities. ¨ Elections were held for new officers in 2007. Chris Adams was re-elected to the position of Secretary. Linda Reid and Jenny Boyle were elected as Co-Presidents for 2007. The position of President-Elect remains vacant. ¨ SMANN recruited 26 new members this year. Membership incentives still continue.
